Road to Emmaus- Jason Upton (www.jasonupton.net)
(The song was here performed by Eric Stark)
Have you ever said goodbye to a hero?
Have you ever had to lay away your dreams?
Have you ever been so lonely that a stranger is your best friend?
then you’ll know what I mean
So this is our highway to heaven
our American dream
the two fools on the road to Emmaus
well they might as well be you and me
Have you ever been angry at your country?
Have you ever been angry at your God?
Have you ever been so angry that you can’t see what you’ve got right in front of you?
Have you ever been distracted by the homeless?
Have you ever thrown your dollar with disgust?
Have you ever thought the great commission’s just too great a cost?
Have you ever played the fool?

When I look around me, my own family, my friends, my professional life, my neighborhood, my city, my country, my world and I see hope fading away, gratitude being something practically in extinction, being polite with others being praised, as if it were something from another world, people spitting on little children, grownups so self absorbed, thinking exclusive about themselves, with the dumb illusion they may live forever, man...
Then, I realize, Jesus, that, indeed: there's no possibility of life other than in You. There simply isn't. I have a personal belief that you can find God through science, which will only point out to the existence of a superior being, as we stand bewildered to realize that, in spite of all advances we still know very little about the mysteries of the Universe...
OR... we can simply act, practing, living the faith preached by the Apostles and by Jesus himself. We can doubt, and I do, still doubt, of so many things. I am most of the time one of those guys on the road to Emmaus, preaching about Jesus to Jesus himself! And only realizing who he was when he was not materialized anymore. How could that be? He was there, just by my side! That's how foolish we can be when we do not see, when we are blinded by our own ambitions, fears and anxieties.
As I meditate over this superb passage, I realize that day after day, I am away. I could be nearer, if only I chose to. If only I wanted to.
If only I decided to be closer to Him.
We can only have our eyes opened if we are near Him.
We can only listen to His voice calling us if we are near Him.
We can only feel His supernatural presence if we allow ourselves to slow our frenetic pace and be still.
The price is not high.
It's a matter of choice and priority.
Luke 24:13-16
...two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.
And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.
And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
